Commitment to the
New Plastic Economy
Watsons is joining its parent company, AS Watson, a signatory of the New Plastic Economy Global Commitment and pledges to reduce the overall environmental impact of its Own Brand packaging.
By 2025
Achieve 100% reusable or recyclable plastic packaging
Eliminate unnecessary plastic packaging
Incorporate an average of 20% recycled plastic content
Reach a 5% reduction in virgin plastic compared to 2020
Phase out problematic plastic packaging:
· Reduce PVC usage by half compared to 2020, targeting 0% by 2030
· Eliminate undetectable black plastics
We are working on removing unnecessary plastic packaging or replacing them with more sustainable alternatives
Investigating reuse models
We offer refill options for many of our Own Brand products
We are partnering with our suppliers to come up with new options for refilling or reusing products
Increasing recyclability and stopping the use of PVC material
PVC is avoided at all costs
Packaging is designed with the aim of recycling in mind
Oxo-degradable plastics are banned
Utilising post-consumer recycled plastic materials as much as possible
We offer products made wholly or partially of recycled plastic such as rHDPE or rPET
Minimising plastic bags in stores
Introduced bags with a minimum of 50% post-consumer recycled plastic and will gradually increase this percentage over time.
Reusable bags are available for sale in all our stores.
Expanding the availability of recycled paper bags from select markets to encompass all our markets.
Improving the sustainability of our products
Microplastics are tiny non-biodegradable plastic particles.
Microplastics are harmful to humans as they can enter the food chain and even be found in drinking water.
Since January 2020, we have banned all brands with rinse-off products that contain microplastics from our stores.

Our Own Brand dry paper products are 100% sustainable – Made exclusively of FSC, PEFC or traceable recycled paper.
Responsible Palm Oil
As part of our commitments to promote sustainable and responsible Own Brand products, AS Watson has taken a group membership to the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (“RSPO”), a leading organisation promoting social and environmental compliance in the palm oil industry. As a part of our strategy, we are expanding the selection of Watsons Own Brand products to be produced with RSPO-certified palm oil, offering more sustainable choices to our customers.
